statue of von Siebold in the von Siebold memorial Japanese garden - Hortus botanicus. P.F.B. von Siebold (1796-1866) was the first Westerner who teached Western medicine in Japan. He was physician on Deshima, a Dutch businesspost near Nagasaki from 1823-1829. He became famous for his study of Japanese flora and fauna.
