Portrait of an abandoned railroad bridge

Posted by Nivad on November 20th, 2008 | 5 comments | 313 views
To complete my series of the abandoned railroad bridge, I write this blog.

I know it took me quite some time to post nearly 20 pictures but besides all other obligations I have I wanted to choose and edit my pictures carefully, just to prevent of getting accused of posting identical pictures.

This bridge can be seen from the main road from Lanaken to Tongeren, where lays peacefully across the canal. And from that point of view you can't actually guess the state of decay it is in, but all it had to do in the past decades was bath in the sunlight and defy the weather, while trains have forgotten this bridge since long although I do remember trains passing by overthere.

Now there are rumors of reopening a passenger line between Maastricht and Hasselt, so I thought, not knowing if this bridge will be renovated or replaced for that purpose, I have to shoot a portrait of it in the state it is now before it disappear from our map.

Thus on a misty cold morning late september I took my bike and went there, for some urban exploration in open air. Such locations are always exciting to visit, climbing over a fence to gain access to the site itself, walking over the moist and slippery wood of the railroad track. Risks being compensated by the magnificent view the bridge offered at times...

I hope this portrait might have an inspiring effect...

I enjoyed your series of bridge photos very much, there were many shots with fine detail, and it was clear you took time and had a passion here. 637690 displayed top of this blog is a fave of mine, it has an aura about it, quite ghostly and chilling. But I must confess the series was getting a little repetitive... it is nice to know a little history and the reason behind your choice to shoot this subject

well,Nivad, wait and see :maybe you'll find a beauty instead of this (beloved by you, it seems ) bridge ... maybe not !
in my city, we had an unusual bridge called "pont suspendu" ( i'll try to get some old scans for you) : it was rebuilt in another way but Toulousains keep on calling it this way, instead it's no more hanging at all :))
i recently read about an exhibition about similar projects , in FRAC center,Orléans. maybe you'll find something on Internet if you're interested but maybe it's some nostalgy that was guiding you and Frac will be like " un emplâtre sur une jambe de bois" for you !
