This summer we leave for the mountains nearby Salzburg, travelling by car.

Since this is a voyage of about 800km and imo a little too far to do this in a single day. So we were considering staying one or even two nights in between as well during the journey to the mountain as during the journey home...

For this stop we'll try to avoid larger cities, with one night to stay we don't the time nor do we feel the need to join in the traffic stress of a mayor city. But I can tell that Wurzburg is about halfway.

I myself was thinking staying the night in Rothenburg am Tauber. But if there are any other suggestions I'm eager to hear them from you...

Grtz

Dear Nivad,

Rothenburg ob der Tauber (-upon Tauber river) is the quintessentially medieval German romatic tourist town. However, most overnight tourists have been Americans, who now find Europe too dangerous to travel to, leaving the town's hotel owners lamenting.

This means, you will rub shoulders with Japanese Europe-in-5-days-visitors during the day, but may have the town for your own between 5:00 pm and 10:00 am. Well probably not so in summer, but at an now quite aceeptable level.

Other than that, it is really is the quintessentially medieval German romatic town and therefore a perfect stop-over:

The site has a link to hotels and inns, some with on-line booking.

Würzburg may be too similar to Salzburg, but worth a visit with its UNESCO heritage castle and wine cellars. The drive along the Main river, starting somewhere up-river from Aschaffenburg is pleasant with some more interesting towns on the way; a fine alternative to the Autobahn. There's an official "Romantische Strasse " (Romantic road) connecting Würzburg, Rothenburg and other mediaval towns with Füssen (of Neuschwanstein castle fame)

From Füssen there's a Deutsche Alpenstrasse to Berchtesgaden near Salzburg.

Another area near your half-way-point is the Fränkische Schweiz:

best regards and enjoy your trip!

imho, just avoid Karlsruhe as stop, because it's only an industrial city ;
Rothenburg is a really lovely stop place but, be careful, it's very touristic and hotels aren't cheap ! and you have to reserve as soon as possible to have a decent place not too expensive; but it's really worth to visit ( and stay in ) this little medieval city ;
btw, have a nice trip and enjoy your summer vacations !
