Hello Jonny, I have also this little programm and I find it very difficult to begin with HDR's. The interface is very bad and the different ways of tonemapping are diffused. To learn making HDR's you can start with photomatix. You can download the trial and play with it. Once understanding this programm qtpfsgui wil be more easier. Dynamic photo hdr is also a very friendly tool to make HDR's. To bad this programm isn't free but you can practice with these programms.
But for all programms counts, play with it and you learning yourself.

Regards,

Oscar

Hi Grumpy,

In HDR tone mapping, what works on one image won't work on another even if the images look similar to begin with. (Even a small and a large version of the same image will need different settings.) There are few rules that work in all situations. You’ll need to develop a feel for all the sliders and options in HDR programs.

In Qtpfsgui I like Fattal and Drago best. When you use Fattal, try a very small alpha and a very big beta. Don't forget the button "Adjust Levels". It opens a window in which you can adjust your tone map's black point, white point and mid tones. Fattal gives "fantastic" results with deep contrasts and strange halos. To use Fattal effectively you need an image with very little noise in it. Drago gives a natural look and is less sensitive to noise. It will bring out nice details in the shadows and reduces highlights without halos.

Photomatix uses an immediate preview. That works nicely for small images, but with bigger images the preview will differ quite a lot from the end result. Dynamic Photo HDRI has an immediate preview that is identical to the final result, but its dynamic tone mapping is not as dynamic as in Photomatix or Qtpfsgui.

This is a Drago tone map made with Qtpfsgui. The top of the flower is in brightly lit by the sun. The bottom had very dark shadows. I used Adjust Levels to restore the contrast after the tone mapping.

It took me a month of trying before I had my first nice result. I hope you'll pick it up faster!

Bye,

Ruud

Hi,

I just started experimenting with HDR to, I use Photomatix and here is one of my first pictures. I really like those surreal skies, but that's just my opinion.

I do not want to keep harping on this subject but where are we going to with these developments? In a few years reality will be hard to find anylonger. Am I too old for this already ?

Just a matter of taste. You don't have to use such strong effects with HDR. For example look at Ruuds picture of a flower.

I see no problems, everyone here playing with HDR will also continu taking "normal" pictures. At least I will.
